Published on 2010 by Jessica Kingsley Publishers

Victim awareness and the needs of victims of crime are a major societal concern. What Have I Done? is a photocopiable resource and DVD to encourage empathy in young people who commit crimes or hurt others through their actions. It is designed to be used directly with young people who have committed a specific crime or caused harm and distress to others through their actions, and challenges the young person to face the harm they have caused and consider what they can do to help put things right. The course is flexible and interactive, and can be used on an individual basis or with small groups, and is suitable for young people with limited literacy. The exercises are challenging, and aim to be engaging through the use of creative arts, film, role-play and discussion. Clear guidance is provided for the course leader, and evaluation is built into the course, including a psychometric test. A DVD to help stimulate discussion is also included. What Have I Done? will be ideal for victim empathy work in Youth Offending Teams and Young Offender Institutions, and can equally be used in schools, children's homes, youth groups and any context with young people. The programme is measurable, featuring pre- and post-programme empathy scales, and is suitable for young offenders subject to a youth rehabilitation order.

Best Effective Home Remedies For Skin Pigmentation

A widespread problem among the masses, especially a beauty concern among women, skin pigmentation manifests itself as dark or light patches of skin, especially on the face. Skin pigmentation is not a life threatening skin condition, but the embarrassment and constant questioning that the affected individual has to undergo is much worse than a life threatening condition.

Exposure to sun and allergic conditions can cause pigmentation. Hereditary too plays a great role in deciding whether you are susceptible to skin pigmentation. Therefore, if your mother and grandmother had pigmentation on the skin, it is most likely that you too would be faced with the condition. Thankfully, home remedies are a dime a dozen when it comes to pigmentation. Even a heredity triggered condition can be considerably reduced by the use of natural remedies.

Potatoes are not just good sources of starch but can also prevent a host of skin pigmentation problems like melasma, dark circles, hyper and hypo pigmentation. Potatoes can lighten the skin with continuous application. For using potatoes for pigmentation, slice one medium sized potato into two and put a few drops of water on the surface.

Why Girls Tend to Get Better Grades Than Boys Do

New research shows that girls are ahead in every subject, including math and science. Do today's grading methods skew in their favor?
As the new school year ramps up, teachers and parents need to be reminded of a well-kept secret: Across all grade levels and academic subjects, girls earn higher grades than boys. Not just in the United States, but across the globe, in countries as far afield as Norway and Hong Kong.

This finding is reflected in a recent study by psychology professors Daniel and Susan Voyer at the University of New Brunswick. The Voyers based their results on a meta-analysis of 369 studies involving the academic grades of over one million boys and girls from 30 different nations. The findings are unquestionably robust: Girls earn higher grades in every subject, including the science-related fields where boys are thought to surpass them.

Less of a secret is the gender disparity in college enrollment rates. The latest data from the Pew Research Center uses U.S. Census Bureau data to show that in 2012, 71 percent of female high school graduates went on to college, compared to 61 percent of their male counterparts. In 1994 the figures were 63 and 61 percent, respectively. In other words, college enrollment rates for young women are climbing while those of young men remain flat.

Think Girls Make Good Leaders & Can Be Good Students

Gender discrimination has come a long way in the past few decades. Colleges have gone co-ed, a woman will soon appear on the $20 bill, and Hillary Clinton is again a candidate in the upcoming presidential election. But according to a new study from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, we still have a ways to go before we reach true gender equality.

The study polled 20,000 students at a diverse group of 59 middle schools and high schools to learn about how they viewed girls' leadership abilities. They found that many teen girls, teen boys, and parents have biases against teen girls as leaders.

When it comes to politics, for example, 23 percent of girls preferred male politicians, 8 percent preferred female politicians, and 69 percent had no preference; 40 percent of boys preferred male politicians, 4 percent preferred female politicians, and 56 percent had no preference.

The study's findings are important because girls make up half our population. If we don't support girls' dreams of making it big, then how can we all ever achieve our dreams? Girls are just as qualified to lead as guys are, and studies show that female leadership styles can be just as effective (if not more so) than traditionally male leadership styles.

Empowering girls through education is best achieved by the member states

Marking a one year's anniversary in the European parliament I have come to realize that all too often we try to focus on issues that are largely distant to Europe's citizens.
This is not because we do not have the best intentions in mind, but mostly because we are trying to reach too far and do not respect the principle that some policies should be best left to the member states and communities to decide.
The topic of girls' empowerment lies at the top of parliament's women's rights and gender equality committee priorities and we will be discussing Liliana Rodrigues' report in the coming days and weeks.

QS University Rankings: EECA – Methodology

First published in 2014’s pilot edition, the QS University Rankings: Emerging Europe & Central Asia (EECA) has been extended in 2015 to feature the top 150 universities in the region. Aiming to celebrate and track the performance of higher education institutions in the EECA countries, the ranking uses a methodology adapted from the overall QS World University Rankings®, and similar to those used for QS’s other regional rankings.
A total of nine factors are assessed, each of which contributes a certain proportion towards institutions’ overall scores. The results table can be sorted to compare universities on each of these nine indicators.

Academic reputation (30%)
As is the case for all of QS’s university rankings, global reputation is assessed through two major international surveys. The first of these is the annual QS Global Academic Survey, which asks academics worldwide to identify the institutions they perceive to be conducting the best work in the own field. In 2015, more than 72,000 responses were considered.

Employer reputation (20%)
Alongside the academic survey, the QS Global Employer Survey asks graduate employers across the planet to name the institutions they believe to be producing the best graduates in their sector. For the 2015 rankings, more than 44,000 employer responses fed into the results.

Faculty/student ratio (15%)
In lieu of a reliable or practical method by which to assess and compare teaching quality internationally, faculty/student ratio is considered. This is based on the number of students enrolled per full-time academic staff member, aiming to give an indication of each institution’s commitment to providing high standards of academic support.

Papers per faculty (10%)
Calculated using data from Elsevier’s Scopus – the world’s largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed academic literature – this indicator reflects research productivity, based on papers published per academic faculty member.

Web impact (10%)
Based on the Webometrics ranking, this indicator reflects the extent of each institution’s online presence, one aspect of their commitment to international engagement and communication.

How to Be a Gorgeous, Smart and Classy Teenage Girl

1. Practice good manners. If you tease people a lot, for no reason, you have to stop this. No one likes a girl who teases people for no reason. Say 'yes please' and 'no thank you' is one shot. Also, try to smile a lot. Don't talk behind people's back. If your friends or anyone's encouraging you to gossip about people, stop yourself from it by just saying 'i think he/she (the person you're gossiping about) is just fine. let it be, don't be so mean' and walk away. Never talk back to your parents. Maintain good relationships with your classmates, friends, teachers and parents! This might be hard if you've already started lots of problems with them.

2. Don't argue too much. Argue positively! If the argument's going to the negative side, just walk away.

3. Don't drink and don't smoke! This is really bad as it kills you slowly and encourages people to talk behind you as well.

4. Avoid being the centre of attention. No one likes it, when you're just being so annoying so try to avoid yelling, screaming, running around and laughing too loud.

5. If someone hates you, don't mind them. Don't even speak a word about them. Remember, a classy girl is educated and educated people never looks back at their 'followers'.

6. Shower every day! This gets rid of dirt on your body and it keeps your skin hydrated. Try to shower before school, and at 5.00 pm just after you do things, and you want to relax.

7. Drink lots and lots of water! This is the most important part of all! As it keeps your brain active all day and keeps your skin amazing!

8. Be organized! Never leave your workplace look messy and always keep a small binder with you everywhere! Keep your worksheets in a file!

9. Be nice to people! Do them favors and help them if you can! Don't be that girl who just watches people in misery and leaving them alone. Help them if they fell or if your mom needs some help in the kitchen?

10. Gain trust from people. If you asked your mom to go somewhere and you promised her to go home by 8.00 pm, don't go over 8.00 pm! Notify your mom whether you're doing this, or that, or this..

11. Find your talent! You might be good at singing, or dancing, or playing guitar, or making videos, or editing photos, and join a club!

12. Stay positive! If anyone judges you or says bad things about you, remember you are EDUCATED by your parents and tell them, 'I don't need to know such things. I don't need to know your opinions about me' and then smile, and walk away! Don't take it too seriously! They're just doing that because they want to be like you but they failed!

13. Don't spill out all your secrets and problems to your friends! Just spill them to the ones you trust, which is your best friends! Who knows if they can help you go through things?

14. Stay healthy! Don't eat too much junk food!

15. Be sociable! Find things in common with new people!

16. Don't show your anger towards people. This is a big NO. if you are angry, all you have to do is just to count from 1 to 10, and splash yourself some water in the bathroom.

17. Never touch your face or any other body parts in public except for your hair.

18. If you like a guy, make him feel comfortable around you! Don't make him annoyed around you! Treat him something once and talk to him! Don't be that shy! Also stare at him for about 3-4 seconds, then look away! Smile around him a lot and get to know his friends! If you both have a hobby or activity in common, try to come up with a clever plan to arrange a date consisting your common activity

19. If someone compliments you, say thank you.

20. Have self esteem! Not too high, nor too low but always think positively about yourself and never cease to go for what you want.

Girls Education is Most Important

Building resilience can improve girls’ health and education faster and more effectively, but it’s a missing component of nearly all global development efforts to improve girls’ outcomes.

For some time now, the global development community has known that investing in the health and education of marginalized girls creates a ripple effect. An educated girl is more likely to be healthy, find work, and reinvest her income in her family than a boy (90 percent of her future income vs. 35 percent for a boy).

Using internationally validated assessments, the RCT confirmed that resilience training not only had significant impact on girls’ emotional and physical well-being, but also amplified the impacts of our adolescent health-only curriculum. For instance, for girls involved in the program:
  • Emotional resilience improved 33 percent
  • Health knowledge increased 99 percent
  • Attitudes about gender equality improved 18 percent
  • Clean-water behaviors improved 96 percent.

The Secret to Getting a Great Top Knot

When you don’t have time to go the heated styling route the knots are the best way to go and also it helps you to hide your hair dryness while you are not washing it. Following are the best solutions we recommended:

1. Flip your hair upside down when gathering hair into the ponytail. This will help you to get it as high as possible.
2. Once you’ve gathered the hair, flip upright and look up to the ceiling, so your head is tilted, which will make smoothing the hair into place that much easier.
Once your ponytail is secured, wrap the hair around the base and secure with four to five large bobby pins. The result? A fuss-free hairstyle that will stay in place all day.

Top 5 Reasons Why Female Education is Important and It Should Be

1. Increased Literacy
Of the 163 million illiterate youth across the globe, nearly 63 percent are female. Offering all children education will prop up literacy rates, pushing forward development in struggling regions.
2. Human Trafficking
Women are most vulnerable to trafficking when they are undereducated and poor, says the United Nations Inter-Agency Project on Human Trafficking. Through providing young girls with opportunities and fundamental skills, the $32 billion annual industry can be significantly reduced.
3. Political Representation
Across the globe, women are underrepresented as voters and restricted from political involvement. The United Nations Women’s programmes on leadership and participation suggests that civic education, training and all around empowerment will ease this gap.
4. Thriving Babies
According to the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative, children of educated mothers are twice as likely to survive past the age of five. Foreign aid for schoolhouses and curriculum development could greatly benefit the East African country of Burundi, where nearly 16,000 children die per year.
5. Safe Sex
A girl who completes primary school is three times less likely to contract HIV. With these statistics in mind, The World Bank calls education a “window of hope” in preventing the spread of AIDS among today’s children.
